The 985 square miles are dotted with eelgrass beds, mussel bars and salt marshes providing ample opportunity for striped bass and bluefish during the spring and summer months. Mild winters extend the recreational season to include catches of cod, pollock and flounder. ME0102 Kennebec, Sheepscot and Damariscotta River [G.P.S.] These three rivers flow into the Gulf of Maine after creating a rich environment of salt marshes and islands to nurture juvenile fish and provide a harbor for baitfish. Attracted by the forage, striped bass and bluefish become primary fishing targets both inshore and on the river during the summer. Catches of winter flounder, cod, haddock and Pollock are also common within 3 miles of the shore. MA0103 Cape Cod Bay [G.P.S.] The exploits of many well-known Pilgrims still echo here and the fishing is as unspoiled as the historical surroundings. Anglers will discover Atlantic cod, bluefish, bluefin tuna, striped bass and other species. Whale watching is very popular due to the presence of finback, Minke, humpback, pilot and northern right whales. MA0105 Gloucester (Danversport to Hampton Harbor) [G.P.S.] America's oldest seaport, about 30 miles northeast of Boston. The economy and culture here has been tied to commercial fishing for nearly 350 years. Not much has changed as the sport fishing industry has learned to capitalize on the exceptional saltwater angling for bluefish, striped bass and flounder. The rich waters of the Atlantic offer many challenges to all levels of experience. MA0106 Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket Island [G.P.S.] High level detail of these islands, off the Massachusetts coast. Steeped in history, this area is known as one of the world's most elegant seaport communities and yachting centers. MA0102 Nantucket Sound (including Nantucket Island) [G.P.S.] Home to the Kennedy compound and surrounding Hyannis Port, Nantucket Sound offers some of the most revered fisheries in the world. Anglers routinely work the surrounding waters in search of the local "grand slam" of striped bass, bluefish, bonito and false albacore. New Hampshire NH0101 New Hampshire/Southern Maine [G.P.S.] The Atlantic coast from Hampton Harbor to the Saco River includes the entire coast of New Hampshire, as well as the South Coast region of Maine. Fishermen travel from all over New England to catch migrating striped bass and bluefish during summer months. Many offshore anglers are attracted to groundfish such as winter flounder, Atlantic cod, pollock and haddock - all regarded as excellent eating fish. |
